Brook Baker Indiana Collegiate Press Association Journalist of the Year
The Brook Baker Indiana Collegiate Journalist of the Year Award is named in remembrance of the late campus editor of The Trailblazer at Vincennes University. Baker was a renaissance journalist who was primarily interested in investigative reporting. This award from ICPA honors her memory and recognizes excellence in collegiate journalism in Indiana.
In 2023, there were four nominees from across Indiana: Taylor Wooten, Franklin College; Aidan Thomas, University of Notre Dame-St. Mary’s College; Joe Duhownik, Purdue University; and Cate Charron, Indiana University. This year Brook Baker recipient is Cate Charron.
Judge: Cate’s in-depth stories about the saga of a sexual assault, the ramifications of which unfolded over years — with one student found guilty of sexual assault and suspended, and suspended again — were examples of dogged and persistent reporting efforts. The details and degree to which Cate explores the truth, and the lengths she goes to to see where things stand today are extraordinary. That she also went to great effort to get Chris Parker to talk (the story said she reached out nine times) is commendable.

Baker was a renaissance journalist who was primarily interested in investigative reporting. This award from ICPA honors her memory and recognizes excellence in collegiate journalism in Indiana.
Judge: Matt Cohen’s remarkable portfolio showcases his ability to tackle in-depth subjects in a way that invites the reader in. He blends his reporting with his ability to write near-perfect feature ledes. His news judgment shines, too, unfolding in compelling stories about the pandemic. In addition, he has given attention to stories that might not have been written — such as the one about the many unmarked graves in Bloomington — if not for a young reporter willing to spend a lot of time and care getting people to open up about their families. (The story about the cemeteries was also notable for the beautiful photography and page design.) In short, Matt’s work is outstanding.
